The Lord of Bridgwater title has been in use for more than 940 years and held by some famous people. Issued in 1086 by Willaim the Conquerer (King William I) to Walter of Douai when Bridgwater consisted of a few manor houses on the side of the river Parrett and had a value of £7 in the Domesday book.

Today the title is a stand alone entity free of land and property.
